The County of Dorset
Dorset has a magnificent coastline, twenty five miles of which is designated a World Heritage Site. This Jurassic area is well known for fossil hunting along the coast. There is something for everyone from windsurfing and sailing to walking along the promenade and swimming in the sea.

There are plenty of seaside resorts including Christchurch, Weymouth and Poole. Lyme Regis with its 13th century harbour known as the Cobb and its steep streets is a delightful seaside town. The are also the villages of East and West Lulworth which are next to the famous Lulworth Cove which is bordered by breathtaking cliffs of geological importance.
The county town is Dorchester which has elegant 18 th century houses and broad streets and was one of the settings used by Thomas Hardy the novelist. The county museum has Thomas Hardy memorabilia and there is a Jurassic Coast Gallery. Also well worth a visit is the hill fort of Maiden Castle and the Roman Town House which is said to be the finest example of this type in Britain.

Dorset has a beautiful countryside of rolling hills, meandering streams in green valleys and rich pastureland. A large part of Dorset has been designated an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The countryside and coastline are a walker’s paradise with wonderful sea and country views. Other outdoor activities include cycling, fishing, golf and horse-riding.
There are many picturesque villages and towns in Dorset including Sherborne which has mediaeval buildings and two castles and Abbotsbury which has the remains of a Benedictine Abbey with medieval ruins, a tithe barn and a millpond. Overlooking the village of Cerne Abbas is the Cerne Giant, thought to be an ancient symbol of spirituality. It is an impressive 180ft male figure carved into the hillside.
All in all a perfect holiday destination catering for all tastes, for those who want to relax and unwind to the more adventurous looking for activities and places of historic interest.
